Dear Nathan,
Are you really 7 years old? As I am typing this, it has occurred to me that for the first time ever you can actually read your own birthday letter. You have grown up so much this last year.
We are so blessed to have you in our lives and we are so proud of the thoughtful, kind and caring boy you are. You have such a gift of empathy. You are so aware of what others are going through and try very hard to make sure that no one is being left out or hurt. You are such a gift as a friend. What an admirable quality. We find ourselves learning so much from you and your example.
Watching you love first grade so much was a pleasure and we are so excited for you to begin second grade. We appreciate your patience as we are learning about second grade right along with you. Daddy and I both are blown away by how quickly you have adapted to school and everything that goes along with it. You have made this parenting job fairly easy and we are so thankful for that!
We all love you so much. When you're not around your sisters miss you terribly even though at least one them will never admit it in your presence. This week in particular, with you being on your own at VBS and your sisters with me, I've repeatedly had to tell them that you are okay and we'll be seeing you in just a few hours. As we drove home on that last day without you in the car, each of your sisters "oohed and ahhed" over the crafts you made at VBS. I am so proud to watch each of you be proud of each other.
We so enjoy watching you grow in your love of the Lord each day. You are shining God's light every day. Each night when we check in on you before we go to bed, we say a little prayer over you and thank God for allowing us to share your life and we also pray that He will continue to use you to touch the lives of others.
We are so thankful to you for your understanding and patience this week (and countless other times) as Mommy and Daddy take on a little too much and aren't always the most shining examples of patience ourselves. We so enjoyed celebrating your big day today with your friends. You have made some really great friends here and it is so much fun to watch you enjoy each other. It is easy to see that the time is approaching when we'll be less and less present as you enjoy your friends and for now we are treasuring this time.
We love you so much, Buddy. Thanks for making us laugh. I especially enjoyed our devotional time together before bed tonight. You remind me how to laugh and enjoy life more and you teach me so much. We are all very proud of you. Happy 7th Birthday!

As the entertainment snores on the couch next to me, I am sitting here looking through pictures from the last 7 Augusts. I'm still on a sugar high from imported candy and butter cream frosting. Of course, there's also the natural high from laughing with my birthday boy before bed tonight. We couldn't have asked for a better day...not just no rain, but lots of sunshine, warm (but not boiling hot) and so much fun! Another reason I'm awake alone tonight is because I went to bed first last night. He spent lots of time on the details. A la 2 years ago (at Ninja Turtle Training--on his 30th birthday no less), he spent well over an hour training 8 little Jedis today. It was fun and we laughed a lot. Looking over the pictures, I'm reminded just how challenging it is to be the planners, entertainment, servers, camera crew and parents of not only the birthday boy, but 2 more. We make a good team though. We're not finished yet. Tomorrow, more friends and fun. The rest of us will begin work on Episode 32 for a certain sleepy Padawan trainer. Hopefully we can talk him out of his Tuesday soccer game so that we can celebrate The Day all together. The best gift? Babysitter lined up for Friday night. Long overdue.
7 years ago (although not in this time zone)that sweet little face was just 10 minutes old. Several hours later, someone was snoring on the couch (a la maintenant) and someone else was wired and wide awake exploring a brand new person, enjoying first time snuggles and overwhelmed with a new love unlike any experienced before. Happy Birthday to our baby boy.

(For the Texas readers...3 of us were representing today. It is August, ya know. The other Longhorn fan? Yeah, his dad is an aggie. We had nothing to do with his conversion and interestingly enough, our son has learned more about loving the orange and white and football from this (obviously brilliant) young man than from us. We'll do better this year...we've got Bevo On Demand!)

looks like a fun time!!!! My biggest fear is the day I have to start putting bday parties together. I am not sure I am creative enough. You purley amaze me with all you do! Super mom you are!!
